About the project

21Residences
340Olive trees kept
4.2 haOf grove

Twenty-one homes where the grove meets the Aegean, built in stone, oak and lime.

For three hundred years these terraces held olives, not houses. We kept the trees, rebuilt the walls by hand and placed each home where the hillside already made room for one.

Architecture

Built the way the hill was farmed.

The architects drew the site before they drew a single house. Scroll through the section to see how each rule shapes it.

Walls

Follow the old walls

Every home sits on a terrace line that existed before us. The dry-stone walls were taken apart, numbered and rebuilt with the same stone.

Height

Stay below the trees

No roof rises above the olive canopy. From the bay you see the grove first, then a few pale walls between the branches.

Light

Open to the west

Living rooms face the bay and the evening sun. Deep eaves and oak shutters keep the summer heat outside.

Residences

Three terraces, three ways to live.

From the top of the hill down to the water: roof duplexes, garden homes and three villas. Every one faces west.

    One view, two lights

The same terrace, morning and evening.

In the morning the bay is still and silver, and the grove holds the night's cool air.

By evening the stone turns the colour of honey and the terraces fall quiet.

    Location

Three minutes to the sea, twelve to town.

Aralı Bay faces west, sheltered from the summer wind by a long headland. The village sits just above, the marina town of Selvenk just beyond.

    Shared places

Quiet places, shared by twenty-one homes.

Everything shared sits on the lowest terrace or inside the hill, so the grove stays a grove.

    Materials

Six materials, chosen to age well.

    People & progress

A small team, on site every week.

Five studios and one site office in the old stone mill. Progress reports go out on the first Monday of each month.
